What is our S.T.E.P. ?
S.T.E.P. stands for Shorkey Technician Education Program. Technicians are favored to be one of the top 20 future jobs to have. Technicians will always be in demand as long as there are vehicles.
S.T.E.P.
The Shorkey Technician Program was designed for those wanting to take a step in the right direction down the path in becoming a technician. This program could lead those who complete the program into having a career and earning a potential of six figures.
How Does the Program Work?
Trainees can enter the program with little to no skills but have the willingness to learn and our passionate about vehicles. In this program, trainees will be taught an extensive amount of knowledge with hands-on techniques. Those who complete the program will receive their state and emission certificates and hired at one of our Jim Shorkey Auto Group Manufacturer’s rooftops.
Benefits of the Program
During the length of the program, trainees will have paid training and a tool allowance program to help with the start of their careers. Also, trainees will be mentored by a 30-plus-year master automotive technician who has been in the dealership environment for most of his career. The trainees will get their state and emission certifications, paid vacations, health benefits, uniforms, 401k, paid holidays, and much more.

Cold weather is here, and this is the time of year people like to buy new tires and/or snow tires to make their vehicle more reliable. Have you ever questioned if you should get an alignment, before or after getting new tires?
Should you get an alignment before putting new tires on your vehicle?
Did you know the life of your vehicle’s tires can be shortened by a many of different of factors, including worn suspension and steering parts, your driving habits, the type of road surfaces you drive on, and your vehicle’s alignment? Most mechanics recommend checking the alignment regularly, especially if you buy new tires, but should you get your tires changed before you get an alignment on your vehicle?
Let’s start with what is an alignment. Not everyone understands what the term alignment means and how an alignment affects your vehicle. To better know whether you should have the alignment completed before or after you replace the tires, let’s look at the process.
First, your vehicle’s steering and suspension consist of several parts that must all be in good condition and properly aligned to make sure your vehicle handles properly, and the tires wear evenly. These parts typically include the following:
• Struts or shock absorbers
• Steering rack and pinion or steering linkages and steering gear
• Ball joints
• Control arms
• Tires and wheels
When your vehicle rolls off the production line, these items are in perfect alignment with each other using a computerized, laser-guided alignment machine. However, potholes, mileage, collisions, and many other issues can cause these parts to become out of alignment. While a vehicle with a less-than-perfect alignment typically increases tire wear, worn tires rarely, if ever, cause your vehicle to become out of alignment.
Which should come first: New Tires or Alignment?
Most experts suggest that the only effect worn tires are likely to have is a change to the vehicle’s ride height which, given today’s steering and suspension design, is unlikely to influence the alignment. So, should you complete an alignment before you install new tires, or should you wait until the new tires are on the vehicle?
While your vehicle’s alignment can play a major role in how well or poorly the tires wear, other factors can also cause similar issues. One of the most common issues concerns worn or damaged steering and suspension parts. These parts include all moving and stationary steering parts, shocks, struts, and springs. Before you invest in either a new set of tires or an alignment for your vehicle, you might be better off having a certified technician inspect your vehicle’s steering and suspension for you.

Windshield Wiper Replacements Are Important: Here’s Why
Living in the Northeastern region of the United States, we are no stranger to rain. Not just rain, a lot of rain. Flash floods, micro bursts, and series of rain for days. When it rains, it pours and because of that, we use our windshield wiper blades often. You probably already know how important it is to get things like oil changes and tire rotations done, regularly. However, do you know how important it is to replace your windshield wipers? This is actually an important part of caring for a vehicle.
How Often Should Wiper Blades Be Replaced?
Wiper blades should be replaced every six months or as soon as you notice a difference in driving visibility. They are designed to move over your windshield surface in a smooth, simple motion. When wiper blades no longer make proper contact with the windshield surface, they can begin to squeak, smear, or streak reducing driving visibility. Unfortunately, blades damaged or broken will not work as designed.
How Do You Know The Blades Need Changed?
Other than the sound of the blades and wipe quality, here are a few ways to inspect the wiper blades for replacement:
- Check squeegee wiping edges. If the edges are worn, this can prevent the wiper blade from making strong contact with the windshield and reduces wipe quality.
- Visible cracks, tears, and missing pieces in the rubber squeegee’s edge.
- Flex rubber squeegee back and forth to see if it is still flexible. Aged squeegees will have difficulty conforming to the shape of your windshield and create streaks.
- Tug or lightly pull wiper blade to ensure has been securely installed on the wiper arm.
Check that squeegee is secure in the wiper blade frame is in place.
Why Do Wiper Blades Deteriorate Quickly?
Wiper blades deteriorate due to many environmental factors including:
Sun: Ultraviolet light and ozone deterioration
Oil: Car waxes and exhaust hold rubber-deteriorating oil
Airborne debris: Sand, mud and dust carried in the wind
Visibility is fundamental to safe driving. Although drivers depend on their vehicles’ wiper blades to clear away rain, sleet and snow, many wait to replace them until they need them the most. Remembering to maintain wiper blades regularly can maximize visibility, efficiency and reliability.
