What important service checks are most ignored by the driver?

Keeping your car up to date on all service checks can be time-consuming and sometimes confusing. This can cause some very important service needs to be ignored until it is too late, creating a potentially dangerous situation for you as the driver. We checked in with one of our service managers to hear what types of appointments frequently go unscheduled as well as what the most important service appointments are for your vehicle to have before an issue arises! Cabin Air Filter The Cabin Air Filter of the vehicle is very important and often not considered. This is a filter inside the dash of a car that filters the air from outside to the inside of the vehicle. If ignored, this can limit the amount of air coming through your vents and potentially bring outside contaminants in. As a standard, your cabin air filter should be checked during every oil change. Also, it is recommended that they are replaced every 10,000-15,000 miles. Be sure to consider your cabin air filter during your next vehicle service appointment. Alignments Another important vehicle check that is not always considered is an alignment. Usually, alignments are scheduled once an issue has occurred. They can be caused by things like potholes and usually cause noticeable tire wear to the car. While your car alignment should be checked after any major impact, that isn’t the only time your alignment should be looked at. This should be checked twice a year before issues start to arise. Brakes An extremely important part of the vehicle that can sometimes be overlooked is its brakes. This is another item that usually goes unchecked until there are issues with them and the vehicle. Usually, an appointment is made once they start making noise or noticeable grinding occurs, which at that point, is too late. Brakes should be checked during every tire rotation, which should occur every 5,000 miles on the vehicle. Be sure to stay up to date with brake maintenance to keep your vehicle safe for you and the rest of your passengers. Battery The battery is obviously a very important aspect of your vehicle, and since it is usually unseen by the driver, it is also usually not thought about. This is another piece of your vehicle that should be checked out during every oil change your vehicle has. Checking the battery frequently can help fight against starting issues with your vehicle throughout the year, especially during the colder months. When it is looked at, it is getting checked for any signs of corrosion and cold-cranking amps, which is the rating used to determine the battery’s ability to start the vehicle in cold temperatures. These are just a few important items to get checked with your vehicle. Be sure to stay up to date on maintenance appointments to ensure your car stays safe for you to drive. How to prepare your vehicle for trade-in

Trade-In If your vehicle isn’t running the way it should, or if you just want to upgrade to something new, then a trade-in is most likely your best bet. Trading your vehicle in can be a great way to  get a lower monthly payment on a new vehicle. Whether you are trading in your current vehicle for something new or just selling the vehicle to of our Jim Shorkey locations without purchasing another vehicle, pay attention to all of the details. How to Prepare Your Vehicle for a Trade-In Before taking your vehicle to a dealership for a trade-in, the first step is to prepare your vehicle. Here at Jim Shorkey Auto Group we will take our time to look at every aspect of your vehicle, inside and out. We always want to give you the best price we can, and to do so we have to examine the value of the vehicle you are bringing in on trade. Here are a few tips to getting your vehicle prepped for a trade-in: Fix the Small Issues It might feel weird  paying to get the small things fixed before going to trade in your vehicle, but a small amount of money can make a big difference in the vehicles over all value. Check all fluid levels underneath the hood and be sure to top them off. Check all of the lights in and around the vehicle, and replace them if needed. An oil change and tire alignment can help the vehicle run more smoothly, if necessary. Wash and Detail Clean the vehicle, interior and exterior. This will be a great first impression of your vehicle. On the interior, clean it from floor to ceiling. Take out all your personal belongings and vacuum it, clean the  floor mats to remove any dirt, stains, and scents. If you do not want to clean it yourself, you can always get the vehicle detailed beforehand at Jim Shorkey Finishing Touch. Have the Extras Bring any extra sets of keys along with your vehicle. Other may include: Floor mats if you swapped out the originals for new or all-weather mats. Instruction manuals for the vehicle’s  technology systems Have all of  the accessories that accompany the vehicle. Do Your Homework The biggest mistake people tend to make when trying to trade in their vehicle is not knowing what the the current value of the vehicle is. When you walk into one of  our  dealerships,  you should have a “price tag” in mind of what your vehicle is worth. Take a look at KBB and see what the typical price is for the vehicle you are looking to trade. Look at what other people are asking for the specific make and model. This will give you a good understanding of the market and what you can get up to for your current vehicle. Have the Important Paperwork Be sure to bring all of the vehicles important paperwork with you. This includes the car’s title, service records, registration, and anything else you may need to trade over the vehicle. Vehicles that are well taken care of with records retain more of their initial value. The best way to ensure these we have these records is to have your vehicle serviced at any of our Jim Shorkey locations! Understand The Dealer’s Perspective Ultimately, the trade-in is left up to the appraiser. Some people are confused as to why a dealership may offer a trade-in price. However, there are factors that a we have to consider when appraising  a trade-in and when determining the value. Once the appraiser determines what repairs are necessary and the cost to get the vehicle in good condition, you will receive an offer for the trade-in value of your vehicle. We take trade-ins at all Jim Shorkey Locations. Follow us on social media: Facebook: Jim Shorkey Family Auto Group Instagram: jimshorkeyautogroup Website: jimshorkey.com

Tips for Your Next Test Drive

You may have an idea of the car type you want, but do you know what you want it to drive like? We have some tips for you to look out for on your test drive! Thinking about the following tips should help you find the perfect vehicle for you during the test drive process. Take a Walk-Around: Before you get in the vehicle, we recommend taking an outside walk-around of the car. Be sure to check out all of its exterior features and everything it has to offer. You may also want to ask your salesperson if you can move the car to a different location to do so. Doing the walk-around outside of the dealership with less commotion could be very beneficial. Comfort: For a lot of people, a car is a long-term purchase so one very important aspect to look at is its comfort level. As the driver, you’ll likely be spending quite a bit of time in this vehicle. So, make sure that its features can be set to your liking. When you first get in the vehicle, be sure to adjust the seat so that you are in a comfortable sitting position. Also, take a look at your mirrors, ensure that they are set to where you are able to see on both sides and behind your vehicle with little to no movement needed from you. Another feature to check for comfort is the steering wheel. The steering wheel position can be very important to your comfort in the vehicle, especially on long drives. So, make sure that it is set to a level and position of your liking. Test-Drive Distance: Another tip for your test drive is the length and distance of it. The car may drive perfectly to your liking when you are slowly driving through a parking lot, however, will it still be perfect on a long road trip or main roads and highways? Take the time to drive the vehicle out of the dealership, if possible, test its driving ability on a variety of roadways and especially the most common road types in your area. You will get a better feel for the long-term driving capability of the vehicle when you do so. Perspective: Our fourth tip for your test drive is to swap seats with the salesperson. Taking some time to sit in the passenger seat will give you a different perspective of the vehicle and its features. Also, this can help you get a better understanding of how the vehicle drives and what your passengers will be experiencing in the vehicle. Ask Questions: Don’t forget to ask questions during your test drive, too! The salesperson is there to help you make the best choice of purchase. However, the test drive is for you, not them, so be sure to ask if you can drive in an area you are comfortable in, if possible. Also, the salesperson will be your expert on the vehicle. They will either already have or be able to find the answers you need. Don’t leave a test drive confused or unsure about aspects of the vehicle. Here are some questions to consider and ask during the test drive process: What is the gas mileage? Where is the all-wheel-drive? What are the different drive modes? What are the vehicle’s main features? Where is the gas lever? Where should I service my vehicle? How often should I service my vehicle? We hope these tips can help you get the most out of your next test drive. Good luck on your next car-buying adventure! Winter is coming! Four tips to get your vehicle ready for the season.

It's time to get your vehicle into winter mode. It may feel like winter is far away, but in reality there’s only sixteen weeks remaining and here in the North East the weather rarely waits for the seasons to change before it starts to take a turn. Below are some tips on how to avoid being unprepared or worse, stranded on the side of the road. Winter Tires Winter tires are a big deal when the seasons start to change. These are different from other tires because they are made with a different rubber that has better grip in winter weather and an optimized tread width. This provides extra grip, which prevents the vehicle from slipping on wet or icy roads. Even vehicles that are made with four-wheel or all-wheel drive need winter tires. Maintenance Has your vehicle had it's recommended maintenance based on the mileage? To find this information you can take a look in your owner's manual, or even give any our a service departments a call. Schedule an appointment with our service department sooner rather than later to avoid the cold weather rush. Emergency kit It is best practice to keep a kit in the trunk with a few supplies just in case. There are pre-assembled options available in stores or online. You can also build one yourself: some popular supplies include jumper cables, basic tool set, a first-aid kit, ice scraper/snow brush, flashlight and extra batteries, a blanket, water bottles and a few snacks like energy bars. Having an emergency kit during the cold weather or accident can be vital. Check the Weather Last but certainly not least, make sure to check the weather before heading out. These tips will help to ensure you are safe and have everything you need in case you get stuck out in the cold. Stay safe!
